Most people feel slightly nervous before their first Kickboxing class. That is normal. You may wonder whether everyone else will be more experienced, whether you are fit enough or whether you will be expected to spar immediately.
At a good beginner session, none of those things should stop you from starting.
What should you wear?
For a first class, clean sports clothing that lets you move freely is usually enough. A T-shirt or training top with shorts, leggings or tracksuit bottoms works well. Remove jewellery and bring water.
If you already have suitable boxing or kickboxing gloves, bring them. If not, mention that when booking so the academy can tell you what is required for the session.
Do you need to be fit before starting?
No. Kickboxing develops fitness through the training itself. The first few classes may feel demanding because you are learning unfamiliar movements while also working physically. That is different from needing to arrive already conditioned.
Work at a pace you can control. Consistency is more useful than trying to prove something on day one.
What happens at the beginning of class?
Sessions usually begin with movement and preparation. A coach may use footwork, mobility, simple combinations or coordination drills before moving into more technical work.
Beginners should be shown the basic stance and guard early. Those two things affect almost everything that follows.
Learning punches and kicks
You will normally learn techniques in pieces. A punch is not just an arm movement; it involves stance, balance, rotation, distance and recovery. A kick adds another layer because one foot leaves the floor and your balance has to reorganise.
Good beginner coaching does not rush past those details.
Will there be pad work?
Often, yes. Pads let students practise timing, combinations and accuracy against a clear target. They also make training more engaging because you can feel whether the strike is landing cleanly.
Will you have to spar?
You should not assume that a first Kickboxing class means hard sparring. Controlled partner drills and technical practice can happen long before unrestricted rounds are appropriate. If you are unsure, ask the coach before class.
What if you make mistakes?
You will. Everyone does. The first few sessions are partly about learning how to stand, move, listen to a combination and repeat it while tired. Expect some awkwardness. That is part of skill acquisition.
How hard is Kickboxing for beginners?
The movements are learnable, but they require repetition. You may understand a combination before your body can perform it smoothly. Over time, the gap between thinking and moving becomes smaller.
That is one reason Kickboxing appeals to people who get bored with repetitive exercise: there is always a technical problem to solve.
How often should beginners train?
There is no perfect number. Starting with one or two consistent sessions per week is often more sustainable than doing too much immediately and disappearing after a fortnight. Your schedule, recovery and goals matter.

What happens after your first class?
Use the session to judge the environment. Did the coach explain things clearly? Did you know what you were supposed to do? Did the class feel controlled? Did you enjoy the training enough to want to return?
If the answer is yes, look at the membership options and current timetable. You can also read the wider first-class guide for arrival information.
