Kids Boxing in Northampton: What Parents Should Expect From a First Session

A first Boxing class should introduce the basics without expecting a child to arrive already fit, coordinated or experienced.

For many parents, the uncertainty is what their child will actually be asked to do. At Onyx, the current Kids Boxing class in Northampton is built around stance, footwork, defence, punching mechanics, coordination and controlled technical practice.

They do not need Boxing experience

A beginner can start from the fundamentals. Early training is about learning how to stand, move, keep balance and understand simple technical instructions before trying to make everything fast or powerful.

Why stance and footwork matter first

Hands are only part of Boxing. A balanced stance gives a child somewhere stable to punch from and somewhere safe to return to. Footwork helps manage distance without losing position.

What should they wear?

Clean, comfortable sports clothing that allows free movement is enough for a first visit. Remove jewellery and bring water. Do not feel obliged to buy expensive equipment before the child has tried the class; our first-class kit guide covers the practical details.

Will they be expected to spar?

A first class is an introduction, not a test. Controlled technical practice and partner work can be introduced progressively. Learning to work with another child is not the same as being thrown into hard sparring.

Does Boxing mean they have to compete?

No. Competition is optional. A child can train for skill, fitness, coordination and confidence without entering an event.

When is the current class?

Kids Boxing currently runs Tuesday from 6:30 PM to 7:30 PM at Unit E-7, KG House, Kingsfield Way, Northampton, NN5 7QS. The first class is free and current kids membership is £45 per month with no joining fee. Check the current timetable before attending.
