Search for martial arts prices in Northampton and you will find several different ways academies package training. Some publish a simple monthly fee. Others bundle uniforms, licences or starter equipment into an initial payment. Some offer free trials; others charge for introductory programmes.
That means the cheapest-looking headline price is not always the lowest total cost, and a higher price is not automatically poor value.
1. Monthly membership
Start by asking what the monthly fee includes. Does it cover one class per week, a particular programme or the full suitable timetable? Can adults attend more than one discipline? Are kids memberships separate?
At Onyx, the current published price is £45 per month for adults and £45 per month for kids, with no joining fee. The membership gives access to the suitable Onyx timetable.
2. Joining fees
Some academies charge a one-off joining fee. That may cover administration, membership registration or a starter package. There is nothing inherently wrong with that model, but it should be included when comparing the first few months of training.
Onyx currently has no joining fee.
3. Trial classes
A trial can reduce the risk of paying before you know whether the class suits you. Check whether the trial is free, discounted or part of a paid introductory course.
At Onyx, the first class is free.
4. Equipment
Different sports require different kit. Over time you may need gloves, wraps, shin guards, a mouthguard or other protective equipment depending on the class. Children grow, so replacement costs can matter for parents.
Ask what is essential on day one and what can wait until you know you plan to continue.
5. Competition costs
Competition is optional at Onyx, but for students who choose it, costs can include entry fees, travel, accommodation and sometimes additional equipment. These are separate from ordinary membership and can vary significantly by event.
6. Contracts and cancellation
Before joining any academy, understand the payment arrangement. Is the membership rolling monthly? Is there a minimum term? How do you cancel? Are there notice periods or pauses?
The important point is transparency. Those details should be clear before payment, not discovered afterwards.
7. Number of usable classes
A membership is only valuable if the timetable works for you. A low monthly price is less attractive if the only available class clashes with work or family commitments. Compare the current timetable with your real weekly schedule.
8. Coaching quality

9. Adult and kids value can differ
Parents should look at class suitability, coaching and whether the programme fits the child's interests. Adults may care more about the number of available sessions, training intensity or whether several disciplines are included.
