A coach guiding a student through striking practice at Onyx

Find a class that fits your child

Onyx welcomes children from age five, with the coach confirming a suitable class for their age and readiness. Beginners start with manageable tasks: listening to instructions, moving with balance, practising a technique and stopping when asked. Confidence grows through learning and repetition; children develop at their own pace.

Kids Kickboxing

Punches and kicks, stance, distance and coordinated combinations. Led by Chris Collymore; Friday 6:30–7:30 PM.

What regular training develops

Our Bullyproof UK and Onyx community story explains the academy’s mentoring and anti-bullying purpose, including free female-led training for girls aged 11–17.

Movement and coordination

Stance, balance, footwork and controlled combinations give movement a purpose. Fitness develops as children practise.

Parents: what to expect

Can beginners try Kids BJJ, wrestling or judo?

Yes. The published children’s timetable includes BJJ, wrestling and judo. Beginners learn fundamentals progressively, with a coach confirming a suitable first session for their age and readiness. Explore our grappling programme and check the current class times.

Can parents watch?

Yes. Parents are welcome to watch children’s classes.

What happens on the first visit?

Arrive around ten minutes before the confirmed start time. Meet the coach, explain any concerns and ask where belongings go. Expect a warm-up, simple movement and fundamentals taught at a suitable pace.

What should my child wear and bring?

Clean, comfortable sports clothing, water and no jewellery. There is no need to buy specialist equipment before we confirm what the session requires. Tell us if you already have gloves or protective kit.

What if my child is nervous or shy?

Mention it when booking so the coach knows before you arrive. The first session is an introduction, not an assessment of how confident they already are.

Is contact controlled? Do they have to spar?

Training uses controlled, age-appropriate drills. Children are not expected to spar or prove themselves on their first visit. Ask the coach how partner work and any later sparring progress for your child’s age and experience.

Do they have to compete?

No. Children can train for skills, fitness and confidence without entering competitions.

Who will coach them?

Kids Kickboxing is led by Chris Collymore. Ask about Kids Boxing availability before attending. Our wider coaching team includes Professor Bradman Cuffy for BJJ, Gabriel Valincius for wrestling and Alfie Nourish for judo.

What happens after the free class?

Ask questions and decide whether the training suits your child. There is no obligation to join. If you continue, kids membership is £45/month unlimited and each additional sibling is £22.50/month; two children are £67.50/month. There is no joining fee.
